ACADEMICS

Committed to Faith & Learning

The academic programs of each grade are those determined by the British Columbia Ministry of Education in conjunction with the guidelines established by the Archdiocese of Vancouver.   Holy Cross School is committed to providing a comprehensive education which emphasizes the potential of all learners and provides for them varied learning experiences whereby students are encouraged to think critically, communicate effectively, care deeply, and act wisely. Specifically, Holy Cross School encourages its students to gain a solid grounding in the teachings of Christ and to develop fundamental academic skills that promote the development of the whole child to his or her full potential in order for them to develop into Christian leaders, responsible citizens, and life-long learners.

Grade Level Overviews

The Grade Level Overviews are given to each parent attending Meet the Teacher Night in September.

At Holy Cross, we understand the diverse needs of our students and provide individual attention to support their academic achievement. We are committed to ensuring that each student receives the care and support they need to thrive. Parents, teachers, and learning support teachers collaborate regularly to develop and implement individualized education plans, ensuring that every student has access to all the resources they need to succeed.

The Fine Arts Department at Holy Cross provides students with various opportunities to explore, learn, and share musical, artistic and dramatic skills. Our school encourages students to showcase their talents at different performance opportunities throughout the school year through our academic music (K-6) and band (7) programs.

We take pride in the number of students who express interest in the performing arts and are grateful for the support of the Holy Cross community which allows us to continuously expand our Fine Arts program.

The goal of Holy Cross’ athletics program is to support the students’ physical, emotional, and intellectual growth. Students are encouraged to join a wide variety of extracurricular sports at Holy Cross. Extracurricular sports provide students with an opportunity to develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and integrity.

Students from Kindergarten through Grade 7 at Holy Cross Elementary School enjoy two blocks of French as a Second Language instruction each week. This immersive experience makes learning French fun and interactive through engaging songs and various interactive activities.

Through a collaborative effort between our teacher-librarian and classroom teachers, Holy Cross Elementary School has developed an exceptional and ever-evolving library program from K-7. This initiative aims to cultivate avid readers and information-literate citizens by providing instruction in curriculum support, information literacy, and literature appreciation.

Our library is more than just a collection of books; it is a vibrant space where meaningful experiences foster a deep love for literature and learning. Throughout the year, various school-wide events and activities, such as our Book Fair and Readers are Leaders program, contribute to achieving this goal.

Holy Cross Elementary School's A.D.S.T. (Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies) program is tailored to nurture students' technological proficiency from Kindergarten through Grade 7. This program emphasizes the enhancement of designs through prototyping and testing, and recognizes that skills are refined through dedicated practice, effort, and action.

Our students learn to choose the appropriate technology and tools based on the specific requirements of each task. This approach fosters technological innovation and practical application of knowledge, preparing students to navigate and excel in today's ever-evolving digital world.

At Holy Cross Elementary School, our S.T.E.A.M. program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) engages students from Grades 1 through 7 in dynamic, team-based learning initiatives once per week. This innovative program encourages students to collaborate and work together as a team to accomplish various tasks and create cutting-edge projects.

Through S.T.E.A.M., students not only develop strong problem-solving skills but also gain essential technological competencies that are crucial in today's rapidly changing world. This hands-on, interdisciplinary approach equips our students with the tools they need to think critically, innovate, and succeed in their future endeavors.
